Holyoke is a former mill city on the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, one of the first planned industrial communities in the United States, laid out in the 1840s around a 4.5-mile canal system that powered dozens of paper mills. In its heyday it produced roughly 80 percent of the writing paper made in the country, earning it the enduring name "The Paper City." It is also the birthplace of volleyball, invented at the local YMCA in 1895, and today is home to the largest per-capita Puerto Rican community in the mainland United States.
