Lowell, on the Merrimack River in Middlesex County, was the first large-scale planned factory town in the United States and is called the "cradle of the American Industrial Revolution." Founded in the 1820s and named for industrialist Francis Cabot Lowell, its textile mills, powered by the Merrimack's Pawtucket Falls, once ran more cotton spindles than all eleven future Confederate states combined. Today it is one of America's most ethnically diverse cities and home to the second-largest Cambodian community in the country.
