Pembroke Pines is a large, master-planned suburb in southwest Broward County, about 22 miles north of Miami, that grew from swampy pine flatlands into Florida's fourth-largest city in the Miami metro area with roughly 171,000 residents. Named for a British parliamentarian who once owned two million acres of South Florida, it exploded in population after Hurricane Andrew pushed Miami-Dade families north in the 1990s. Today it is a diverse, family-oriented city of golf communities, big regional parks, and top-rated schools.

- Named indirectly for Sir Edward J. Reed, a member of Britain's Parliament for the County of Pembroke (1874-1880), who in 1882 formed the Florida Land and Mortgage Company to buy about 2 million acres of mostly South Florida swampland from Hamilton Disston; a road through one tract became Pembroke Road.
- First mayor Walter Smith Kipnis built one of the area's first homes in 1956 and suggested the name 'Pembroke Pines' for the pine trees growing near Pembroke Road.
- Incorporated in stages: unofficially March 2, 1959, as a village on January 16, 1960, and as a city on May 22, 1961.
