Kannapolis is a former textile company town in Cabarrus and Rowan counties, roughly 25 miles northeast of Charlotte, built from scratch in 1906 by cotton magnate James William Cannon around what became the world's largest towel-and-sheet mill. After the catastrophic 2003 Pillowtex bankruptcy wiped out the mills, the city reinvented itself around the North Carolina Research Campus and a rebuilt downtown anchored by a minor-league ballpark. It is also the proud hometown of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt.
