Salina sits at the edge of the Smoky Hills in central Kansas, a wheat-milling and manufacturing hub founded along the salty Saline River. Its enormous airport runway, inherited from a Cold War bomber base, made it the launch and landing point for Steve Fossett's record 2005 solo flight around the world. Each June the town swells for the Smoky Hill River Festival in Oakdale Park.
