About Pompano Beach, Florida

Pompano Beach is a Broward County city on the Atlantic between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, named after a local fish and built around three miles of beachfront. It draws divers to a manmade Shipwreck Park, anglers to its municipal pier, and blimp-watchers to the Goodyear base at its airpark. Long a harness-racing and spring-training town, it now blends a strong Haitian-American community with waterfront redevelopment.

Local History

The city is named for the Florida pompano fish (Trachinotus carolinus); by local lore a surveyor, Frank Sheen, wrote down the name of the fish he had eaten for dinner.
The first documented permanent residents, the George Butler and Frank Sheen families, arrived in 1896 as railway employees, and the first train reached the settlement on February 22, 1896.
Pompano was founded in 1908 (later renamed Pompano Beach after merging with a beachside community).
