Oak Lawn is a southwest suburb of Chicago in Cook County, anchored by one of Illinois's busiest hospitals and shaped by a devastating 1967 tornado that killed more than 30 people in roughly 16 minutes. Once a stand of black oaks along a Wabash rail line, it grew into a working-class village of about 58,000 with one of Chicagoland's most established Arab-American communities and a strong South Side Irish streak.
